In Celtic mythology the owl is a creature of the shadow and a messenger or guide of the Underworld. It is to be spoken of only in whispers. In contrast, in Norse mythology the owl might have been associated with the goddess “Snotra”, Goddess of wisdom and courtesy. The Owl was also the chosen bird of the Greek goddess Athena. To this day, we say “wise as an Owl”.
